Applications closed improperly can cause corruption in settings files

Problem

When an application crashes, it can cause corruption in settings files such as default_RadioCommunicationsSettings.rcsx, default_DisplayUnitsSettings.dsrx, MAK CIGI Mappings.mcsx, default_AggregateDisplaySettings.adsx, and so on. For example, the file size becomes 0, or the XML encoding becomes variable, or the content has been corrupted.

One common cause is when machines are turned off while the application is running.
